Book Review: Taking on the Plastics Crisis: Pocket Change Collective by Hannah Testa

Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Raise Awareness

This is a quick and informative read written by Hannah Testa, a teen activist who has inspired many people, young and old alike across the globe with her drive to save the planet. It centers on the harmful effects of single use plastic throughout its lifecycle and offers workable solutions for how we can reduce these harmful impacts.

Testa points out that our reliance on the Reduce, Reuse, Recycle mantra to make ourselves feel better about our consumption should not begin and end with recycling, adding Refuse and Raise Awareness to the mix and pushing her readers to use their immense buying power and voice to speak out against the heavy consumption of single use plastics.

Imagine there is an overflowing tap and water is spilling everywhere. ‘What is your first reaction?’ I ask them. ‘You don’t grab a mop to first clean the mess. You run to turn off the tap'

I think this book is perfect for someone looking for a refresher or introduction to the plastic crisis and with just 64 pages it’s a quick read with plenty of helpful information in a format that’s easily sharable. As Raise Awareness is the last in her list, she points out that we need to be using our voices to not only speak out against the use of single use plastics, but also to help others understand what is going on and why this is important.
